A short review concerning the effects of aromatherapy on drug addiction

Abstract

|
Objective : Aromatherapy, as one of commonly used alternative medicines, has been applied to relieve various psychological disorders by using essential oils from plants. On the other hand, the negative emotions arise during drug addiction and are critical for the development and maintenance of drug addiction. Several aromatic compounds have been demonstrated to lower negative emotions in addicts. We review previous articles concerning the effects of aromatherapy on addiction and the associated negative emotions.
Methods : we searched articles through websites of ¡°Pubmed¡± and ¡°RISS¡± and used the keywords ¡¯Aromatherapy¡¯ and ¡¯addiction symptom¡¯, and ¡¯negative emotion¡¯.
Results & Conclusion : Total 40 articles are reviewed in the present study. The studies showed positive results of essential oil against the stress, depression and anxiety induced by drug addiction. A paper traced the use of aromatic plants in Oriental medicine. Some studies revealed that aromatherapy could alleviate drug-induced craving and seeking behaviors, which are main factors for drug addiction.
